Hello Sidney Families,

We have enjoyed another sunny week at Sidney Elementary!

On Oct. 4 our students participated in our annual Terry Fox Run. Students were working hard and completing laps around the school in honour of Terry and his Marathon of Hope. Thanks to our school community, we raised $635 for Cancer Research. Way to go Sidney Bees!

On Oct. 6 we had our first Family Read In in a few years! It was so wonderful to see students and families enjoying books in our hallways, classrooms and the Learning Commons. We look forward to more Family Read In days this year.

Traffic

The construction at the intersection of Henry and 7th continues.  The crew is trying to accommodate student movement through the intersection during our peak times.  Please give yourself extra time for pick up and drop off as this intersection can get backed up and congested during those times.

Student and Family Affordability Fund

The Province is helping make back-to-school more affordable for students and their families who are struggling with rising costs of living due to global inflation. Through the Student and Family Affordability Fund, $60 million will help school districts make sure students are fed and have the school supplies they need to be successful this year. “Many families in B.C. are feeling the effects of global inflation on daily costs, including groceries, school supplies and other school expenses,” said Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Education and Child Care. “We’re taking action by providing more funding that school districts will use to help meet the needs of families and students.” This one-time targeted funding is intended to:

1. Improve students’ access to nutritional food/meals, before, during and after the school day.

2. Directly offset costs to parents, guardians, and students, such as field trip fees and other cost
pressures they are facing using existing mechanisms such as hardship policies (Administrative Policy 506).

There will be a confidential survey coming out soon for families to share how we can best support.

Please be assured that privacy will be paramount in our approach and information will not be shared with the greater community. Please reach out to Jennifer Batallas, Principal with any questions jbatallas@saanichschools.ca or 250-656-3958.
